Williams makes history as he gets nominated for the prestigious Ballon d’Or award

Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns shot stopper Ronwen Williams has become the first goalkeeper and South African player to be nominated for the Ballon d’Or award while playing for an African club side.

What makes this achievement even more significant is the fact that Williams is the only African goalkeeper out of the 10 nominees to be nominated for the trophy, named after legendary Russian goalkeeper Lev Yashin.

OptaJabu reported that Williams was only the fourth African goalkeeper after Andre Onana, Edouard Mendy, and Yassine Bounou to be in contention to win the award.

Williams came to international prominence and stardom after his heroics in the 2023 AFCON tournament, where he helped Bafana Bafana to a bronze medal.

Williams was the rock at the heart of his defense keeping five clean sheets in seven matches and conceding only 3 goals in the tournament. This led to him being named goalkeeper of the tournament.

The superstar goalkeeper also helped Mamelodi Sundowns to win the 2023/2024 Betway Premiership and led them to a semi-final spot in the CAF Champions League.

The goalkeeper’s own established foundation shared a message for him on Instagram.
