Your Voice, Your Future: Why You Must Attend the Drakenstein IDP Open Days
In the heart of Drakenstein’s communities—from the busy streets of Paarl and Wellington to the quiet corners of Simondium and Saron—a vital conversation has started. It is a conversation that will determine whether your streetlights stay on, how much you will pay for water, and where new houses or sportgrounds will be built.
On Monday, 30 March 2026, the Drakenstein Municipality tabled its Draft Integrated Development Plan (IDP), the Draft Budget for 2026/27, and the Draft Spatial Development Framework (SDF). While these names sound like "town hall talk," they are actually the blueprints for your daily life.
What is at Stake for You?
The IDP is not just a document; it is a promise of how the Municipality plans to spend the money it collects from you. City Manager Dr. Johan Leibbrandt calls it a "strategic roadmap." For a working-class household, this roadmap decides the urgency of fixing broken sewage pipes, tackling service delivery in your ward, and improving public safety.
Crucially, the Municipality has proposed several tariff increases that will affect your monthly pocket:
-
Electricity: 6.3%
-
Water: 7.7%
-
Property Rates: 3.7%
-
Sanitation & Refuse: 4.5%
Don't Let Others Decide for You
Too often, decisions are made in boardrooms while those who feel the pinch the most stay silent. This is your chance to change that. Throughout April 2026, the Municipality is hosting IDP Open Days across all 33 wards from 16:00 to 19:00.
These sessions are designed for you to speak directly to officials. If your neighborhood is being neglected or if you have a proposal to improve social development in your area, this is the platform to be heard.
Where and When to Attend
Here are the key dates for our local hubs:
-
Paarl East: 14 April at the Thusong Centre and Paulus Joubert Primary.
-
Wellington & Mbekweni: 15 and 16 April at the Town Hall and Community Halls.
-
Gouda & Saron: 21 April at their respective Community Halls.
-
Southern & Northern Paarl/Simondium: 22 and 23 April.
If you cannot attend in person, you have until 30 April 2026 to submit your comments via email to idp@drakenstein.gov.za.
Do not sit this one out. When citizens complain about service delivery later in the year, let it be because you spoke up now and held them accountable. Your participation is the only way to ensure the "Drakenstein of tomorrow" includes a fair deal for the working class.
