A&G Brings Food, Art, and Community Together at the Breytenbach Sentrum

A rich sense of community and creative heritage filled the air on the ground floor of the historic Breytenbach Sentrum as local residents, artists, and supporters gathered for the official opening of A&G on Thursday, 13 August 2026. This vibrant new shop offers an inviting space that celebrates local artwork, handcrafted goods, and warm hospitality in a setting designed for everyone in the community.

Founded by Anne-Ghrett (popularly known as "Grietjie"), the unique space blends visual arts with the comforting scent of freshly baked goods, creating an accessible, down-to-earth environment for working-class families, local youth, and seasoned art lovers alike.

For Anne-Ghrett, the decision to launch A&G on the ground floor was driven by a simple, inclusive goal: making local art visible and welcoming to the entire town without any sense of elitism. "I had a shop for a long time, but it didn't get much exposure," Anne-Ghrett explained. "People are now seeing things down here on the ground floor that they never noticed upstairs. I want people to gather here and build community."

This spirit of gathering and shared history resonated deeply with Dr. Amanda Swart during the launch. Noting how the center itself floats on a continuous air of creativity, Dr. Swart reflected on how A&G ties directly into the legacy of Ampie Coetzee and Grietjie. She pointed out that the striking artwork of Breyten Breytenbach showcased right at the front entrance serves as an immediate invitation, pulling visitors inside to explore the broader collection and reinforcing the center's purpose as a welcoming meeting place for people from all walks of life.

That sense of inclusivity extends directly to the diversity of the art itself. Henriette van der Westhuizen, a visual arts educator with over 21 years of experience, currently lecturing at Inscape Education in Cape Town, expressed her admiration for the curated selection, emphasizing how the thoughtful mix of media—from intricate prints to bold paintings—makes the gallery space feel dynamic, approachable, and deeply engaging for ordinary viewers and students alike.

Adding to the personal and local significance of the day, Wellington resident Mitch De Villiers shared fond memories of meeting Ampie Coetzee when he first moved to the town in 2012. For De Villiers, seeing A&G’s artwork actively honored on the ground floor serves as a powerful reminder of how local history stays alive when spaces are built to serve the immediate public.

The opening of A&G carries these deep roots into the broader cultural fabric of South Africa. The name A&G pays homage to Anne-Ghrett and her late husband, Ampie—the celebrated academic, author, and struggle fighter who stood alongside literary icon Breyten Breytenbach. Artistic talent runs deep in the family lineage as well; Anne-Ghrett recalled taking her son Kobus to galleries from a young age before Breyten himself recognized the young artist's talent early on. Today, some of Kobus's artwork is even available in the shop.

Looking ahead, Anne-Ghrett is actively driving a range of hands-on educational initiatives designed to nurture local talent. Her current projects include an art school program hosted every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon—originally started years ago alongside Jack Meyer—as well as an intensive one-year illustration course. She is also preparing upcoming creative workshops in collaboration with artist Kobus Le Grange.
